A micro-credential is a short, specific qualification that proves one skill rather than a whole education. It won't replace a degree. What it does is give you something concrete to put on a resume when your resume is thin, and something concrete to say when an interviewer asks what you've been doing.

The timing of this edition matters. On July 1, 2026, federal Pell Grants became available for short-term workforce programs for the first time since Pell was created in 1965. If you are low-income and considering a certificate rather than a degree, that changes your options substantially — and almost nobody has heard about it yet.
