There is a wide, badly lit space between knowing about a craft and being able to do it under real conditions, for real money, on someone else's deadline. Courses drop you at one edge of it. Jobs expect you to arrive at the other. Almost nobody hands you a map for the crossing. 

This is not about formal, government-funded apprenticeship schemes. Those exist, many are excellent, and if one fits your craft and your life stage you should absolutely take it. This guide is about the far larger set of situations where no scheme exists for what you want to learn, or you're too old for the ones that do, or you already have a job and can't start again at the bottom of a formal ladder.
